The lab's own programme

Utsuwa

A research programme into synthetic reasoning substrates: forms of cognition that belong to neither the human nor the present machine.

The form a system is built in, its substrate, training and architecture, shapes the cognition it can carry. Utsuwa studies that space, and builds towards regions neither biology nor today's machines have reached.

The deeper inquiry

Reasoning is many kinds of thing, Einstein in geometry, Ramanujan in number, Feynman in pictures, and most kinds are still unbuilt. Language is the readout, not the reasoning. Utsuwa asks what a machine reasons in when it is not made to borrow ours.

    The agent tells you it is fair.

    The classic fairness experiment, run on the major frontier models. Each one bargains close to fairly, then accepts a grossly unfair offer almost every time, far more readily than a person would, while explaining, reasonably, that it is being fair. The spoken account is a readout, not the reasoning under it. The agent tells you it is fair. Watch what it does.
