Scholarly, exact and quietly inventive. Power held in reserve.
01 · Foundation
A system for making hidden logic perceptible.
Arké is an independent, patron-funded research lab. It studies the gap between how systems describe themselves and how they actually behave, then builds from what the reading reveals.
Structure emerges from noise. Reading is an active, material act.
Every choice must sharpen meaning, provenance or use. Ornament alone does not ship.
02 · Mark
Quiet Monolith.
Two softly tensioned bodies are held apart by a narrowing seam. The detached Bordeaux seed is the visible source of that pressure.
Keep the pressure legible.
Do not close the seam, attach the seed or redraw the silhouette. The asymmetry is structural.
Give it half its width.
Minimum clear space on every side is 0.5× the mark width. More space is preferred.
Let the mark own the accent.
In the lockup, the seed carries Bordeaux and the wordmark stays monochrome. The standalone wordmark may colour the é.
Protect small sizes.
Use no smaller than 24px digitally or 8mm in print. Use the favicon artwork below 24px.
Do not compress.
Do not outline.
Do not add colours.
Do not rotate.
03 · Colour
Warm contrast. One redline.
Paper and ink carry the system. Steel marks a deliberate passage. Bordeaux is punctuation, never atmosphere.

04 · Typography
Four voices. One register.
Scale and measure create hierarchy. Decoration does not. Type should feel typeset, not styled.
The form comes before the name.
Institutions remember, reason and decide. Their cognition becomes visible in the difference between a stated rule and the practice that carries it.
Read slowly enough and the apparent exception becomes a structure.
OBSERVATION 014 · STATED ≠ ENACTED
Balance short titles. Keep line-height near 1.04.
Use breathing room and a stable left edge.
Uppercase, tracked and brief. Never for prose.
05 · Composition
A quiet instrument.
Wide outer margins, an exact underlying grid and one concentrated event. The page should reveal its intelligence gradually.
Whitespace is the luxury signal.
Isolate one idea. Do not fill an empty measure merely because it exists.
One dark object per surface.
Steel is an event the reader arrives at, not a stripe repeated down the page.
Structure stays visible.
Use indices, rules and alignment to expose the system beneath the composition.
Stillness is active.
About 95% of a surface should remain still. Motion must carry meaning.
06 · Visual language
Fields, traces and forged objects.
Arké’s imagery comes from the act of reading a system. It is procedural, evidence-aware and materially restrained.
Let order resolve from particulate evidence. Do not use noise as empty texture.
Evidence before spectacle.
Particles, nodes and sampled forms may show distributed structure. They should arise from a real method or declared generative rule.
One line carries inheritance.
A Bordeaux rule can mark origin, pressure, causality or a material change. Never use it as casual decoration.
Contain the concentrated argument.
Dark plates hold the one object, finding or proposition that needs physical weight. Use once.
Image direction
07 · Illustrations
Situated materiality.
A second visual baseline for content-rich surfaces. Begin with a place, artefact, practice or trace; choose the medium after the subject. Particles become one option, not the default answer.
The image should feel discovered through attention, not applied after the fact. Painting can hold atmosphere. Textile can hold inheritance. Drawing can hold observation. Particles can hold emergence. Provenance stays visible in every case.
Generated direction studies · not research evidence
The enacted room.
For institutional-cognition essays, publication headers and moments where the human residue of a system matters more than its diagram.
Inherited routes.
For Habitus, institutional memory and writing about how rules, omissions and standing accumulate across time.
The observation plate.
For methods, architecture, fieldwork and protocols where an observational hand should remain visible.
The particulate institution.
For programme openings and system transitions where distributed evidence resolves into a situated whole.
Subject before medium.
Choose what must become perceptible before choosing how it should look.
Translation, not decoration.
The medium should reveal a quality of the subject: atmosphere, inheritance, observation or emergence.
Provenance remains attached.
Label generated work, source documentary work and never let illustration masquerade as evidence.
08 · Voice
Precise. Restrained. Declarative.
Write in British English. Name the real thing, state its evidential status and stop before language becomes performance.
Begin with what is happening.
“The model followed the written rule and violated the enacted one.”
Separate finding from ambition.
“The study tests…” is not “The research proves…”
Keep the institution in view.
Culture is not a prompt layer. It is enacted through practice, standing and memory.
Let the claim carry the force.
No superlatives, false urgency or generic promises of transformation.
Demonstrated requires evidence. Building names active product work. Studying names an open empirical question. Exploring names an ambition. Never collapse them.
09 · Applications
The system at work.
Applications should feel related by posture and construction, not by repeating the logo at maximum size.
Hidden logic,
made perceptible.
The exception repeated until it became the rule.
Stated protocol
Enacted practice
